CCE may be billed when optical colonoscopy is contraindicated as determined by a board-certified or board-eligible gastroenterologist, a surgeon trained in endoscopy, or a physician with equivalent endoscopic training, documented by ICD-10-CM code Z53.09.
All uses of CCE must meet the reasonable and necessary requirements of Local Coverage Determination L38571.
CCE is indicated when optical colonoscopy cannot be safely attempted as determined by a board-certified or board-eligible gastroenterologist, a surgeon trained in endoscopy, or a physician with equivalent endoscopic training; report ICD-10-CM Z53.09.
CCE may be used when an instrument colonoscopy has been attempted and was incomplete; report ICD-10-CM Z53.8.
