Payers and policies in Backwork
Backwork holds coverage policies from 70+ payers: commercial health plans and the organizations that manage their prior authorization, plus CMS Medicare. Counts are rounded down.
The library in numbers
- payers with published policies
- 70+
- active policies
- 33,000+
- commercial payer policy records
- 36,000+
- Medicare LCD, article, and NCD records
- 6,000+
- procedure, drug, and diagnosis codes referenced
- 74,000+
Record counts include retired and superseded versions, which Backwork keeps so policy history stays readable. The active count leaves them out.
Payers
Each linked payer has a public page listing its active policies, with the codes each policy lists and a link to the payer’s source. Recent changes are on the policy updates page.
Policy types
Medicare documents are local coverage determinations (LCDs), billing and coding articles, and national coverage determinations (NCDs). Commercial payers publish medical, drug, and prior authorization policies under their own names, which Backwork keeps as the source labels them.
| Policy type, as the source labels it | Active policies |
|---|---|
| PayerPolicy | 28,748 |
| Article | 1,913 |
| LCD | 1,899 |
| NCD | 866 |
| Clinical Guideline | 343 |
| Medical Policy | 9 |
| Drug Policy | 1 |
How updates work
- Backwork collects each payer’s policies from the payer’s own published library, one source at a time.
- New and changed documents go to a staging area first. Automated checks compare them with the source and with what Backwork already holds.
- A person reviews the results and approves each production update. After the update, the counts and sources are checked again.
- When a policy changes, Backwork records the change so teams that monitor that policy can review it.
Refreshes happen source by source, so some payers are more current than others. Each policy in Backwork shows its effective date and a link to the payer’s source. Check the source before you rely on a policy.
