Issue: Human Tumor Assay Systems are tests that detect resistance and/or sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents. The Coverage Issues Appendix, §50-41 now reads: "Human tumor drug sensitivity assays are considered experimental, and therefore, not covered under Medicare at this time." HCFA must evaluate whether current literature supports the accuracy of available chemosensitivity testing; and, whether the assays are "reasonable and necessary" oncology treatment.
